Edna Graham, who died in May this year, was responsible for over 25 full-scale operas, 25 major musicals and very many concerts and children’s shows staged at the KMT over 30 years. Her legacy as a teacher and inspirer of young performers will last for many years to come. This celebration of her life will involve a large number of people from the world of classical music and Musical Theatre. All profits will be donated to St Joseph’s Hospice, Hackney. Samuel Beckett’s acclaimed play was first performed in New York in 1961. During the virtually one-woman play, Winnie, the central character, sinks slowly into the ground until only her head can be seen. All the while she keeps up a stream of cheerful trivia chatter. Famous Winnies have included Madeleine Renaud, Peggy Ashcroft and Billie Whitelaw. The role tonight is played by Kenny Award winner, Soudabeh Neeya. David Tristram’s latest comedy is the funny and touching story of two mature students studying History and a lot more at University. The play centres around Rick, who loses many of the people and things important to him in the space of a few months. He is forced to make drastic changes and bravely heads off to University despite being in his mid-40s. The fun starts when he tries to fit in with his new friend and bad influence, Noel. This laugh out loud comedy is by the same author as “The Secret Lives of Henry & Alice”, which audiences found so hysterical when performed at the KMT last year. Johann Strauss’s widow, Adele, recalls their famous soirees, with their bon vivante and coquettish musical guests, their indispensable butler, Leopold and the glorious music. Featuring highlights from “Die Fledermaus”, “Gypsy Baron”, “A Night in Venice”, “Orpheus in the Underworld”, “Tales of Hoffman”, “Merry Widow”, and favourite waltzes such as the “Blue Danube”, accompanied by the Pizzicato String Ensemble, the soloists are from national and international opera companies. To repay Dame Beatrice for giving her a job in spite of her criminal background, Lily presents her with a gift – a mink stole filched from the flat next door. The Brigadier deploys his “troops” to return the fur. The whole campaign is so invigorating, that the “guests” decide to embark on a series of similar daring escapades.
