CHARLEY'S AUNT

This classic evergreen farce is set in Oxford during Commemoration Week 1892.  The imminent visit of Charles Wykeham’s aunt, Donna Lucia from Brazil, (“where the nuts come from”) provides an excuse for Charles and Jack to invite their young ladies to meet her.  When a telegram arrives postponing the visit, the boys realise they have no chaperone and the girls will accordingly refuse the invitation.  The solution is to persuade their amiable fellow student, Babs, to impersonate the Aunt. Babs’s ingenuity is severely taxed when – naturally! -  the real Aunt turns up unexpectedly. This is one of the most successful plays of all time – allegedly it has been performed somewhere in the world at least once every week since it was first written.
