THE KING AND I

The story of Anna and the King of Siam had been told in a novel and a film before Rodgers and Hammerstein  turned it into a musical.  Thereafter the story has forever been associated with the March of the Siamese Children , Getting to Know You, We Kiss in a Shadow, Shall We Dance and the other great songs from this show. Yul Brynner  spent most of his life associated with this show which has been revived almost continuously throughout the years.  For the past twenty-one years “The King and I” has been unavailable for amateur production – so KMT audiences have been denied this glorious treat for a whole generation.

This is a great treat and a sure-fire sell-out.  Be sure to book in advance!

MASTERCLASS

This is a portrait of a great star stalking the stage like a tigress. Maria Callas – her voice in tatters and her brilliant career behind her – held  Master Classes to pass on her experience. From the transcripts Terrence McNally has created a Tony Award winning play – portraying Callas on the one hand hilariously bullying her pupils, and on the other as a tragic icon, a genius torn apart by suffering.  As Callas  relives her own glorious past (there are recordings of the real Callas that will even send shivers down opera-resistant spines) the story that emerges is as much soap opera as operatic: Ugly Duckling transformed into elegant legend; marriage to a “sugar-daddy”;  the unforgiving paparazzi;  a life dedicated to art and sacrificed for her  doomed  love for the Greek tycoon, Aristotle Onassis. You don’t need  to be an opera buff to enjoy this  play of notable wit, humanity and insight.

RICHARD III

Our Shakespeare season starts with the glorious villainy of Richard III – mis-shapen,  ruthless and prepared to stop at nothing to win the throne for himself.  As he claws his way to the top, clambering over dead bodies to get there, we cannot help but admire his single-minded ambition and his brilliant scheming.  When he finally gets his come-uppance at the Battle of  Bosworth  a part of us is sorry to see the end of such glittering evil.  Making us feel sorry for one of the greatest monsters ever to walk the English stage is  just the kind of achievement that makes Shakespeare the greatest playwright of them all.

OLIVER

Lionel Bart broke every known record with his smash-hit “Oliver” – it even became the longest-running musical in theatre history (a record eventually overtaken and currently held by “Cats”) It’s easy to see why, of course!  A great, heart-warming story; immortal characters like Fagin,  Dodger and the villainous Bill Sykes;  glorious songs that have become classics!  “Consider Yourself”, “As Long as He Needs Me” “Reviewing the Situation” – the list goes on.  “Oliver” is THE great British musical, regularly revived and always a delight.

MUSIC FROM THE GOLDEN AGE OF DIXIELAND

This toe-tapping trip down Memory Lane features one of our best known Dixieland bands, trumpeter Alan Gresty and clarinettist Brian White’s Ragtimers.  The band has infectious enthusiasm for the music of the Masters of Dixieland, including Louis Armstrong, Hoagy Carmichael and Bob Crosby and his Bobcats.  They play great numbers like South Rampart Street Parade, Who’s Sorry Now, Dinah, High Society and many, many more.  Will you be “At the Jazz Band Ball”?

This is one of the most exciting events ever staged at the KMT.  Each evening will see four individual local schools staging interpretations of  Shakespeare plays.  Each of the four plays will be performed in a specially condensed 30 minute version and will be interpreted whichever way the students wish – traditional, modern, whatever!  Over the four nights we will see sixteen different interpretations from today’s young people. Details of which schools will be performing and the programme itself will be available nearer the time

All Tickets: £5

THE BARD ON BROADWAY

An evening of Broadway, West-End and Hollywood songs inspired by Shakespeare. How many can you name?  You’ll definitely know the songs from “Kiss Me Kate” and “West Side Story”;  Rodgers and Hart wrote “The Boys from Syracuse”; but you’re unlikely to know anything from “Rockabye Hamlet”!  Old ones, new ones, loved ones, neglected ones!  Sing-along-a-Shakespeare!

SERENADE TO SHAKESPEARE

More music inspired by Shakespeare, but this time with the Helios Ensemble with music from Walton’s “Henry V” and a sixteen strong chorus of top soloists in Vaughan Williams’ “Serenade to Music”.  There will be a spoken scene from Shakespeare’s “Merry Wives” followed by the same scene as interpreted in Nicolai’s opera version, some jazz settings by John Dankworth and George Shearing,  some Cole Porter and some Elizabethan Lute music.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

Our Shakespeare season closes with a romantic comedy of two sets of lovers, Hero and Claudio who, with the help of gloriously pompous Dogberry, finally get to the altar in spite of the dastardly Don John. The second couple, Beatrice and Benedick, are drawn together in adversity and come to realise they enjoy being in love more than being at war.  Kenneth Branagh transferred this play brilliantly to the screen taking the part of Benedick for himself with Emma Thompson as Beatrice.  He could not resist it, can you?

BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS

The title may sound a bit shocking, but this musical is a delight from start to finish! Based on a real life story: a crusading television programme tries to close down the Chicken Ranch – a long-established Texas house of ill repute .  The girls and their farmboy clients decide to fight back.  This is a very funny, raunchy romp with a few sentimental moments – and it ran for over 1500 performances on Broadway, a couple of years at Drury Lane, and became a highly successful film starring Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds.

AMADEUS

One of the most successful plays of the recent past, Peter Shaffer’s “Amadeus” was a world-wide phenomenon, both onstage and as a hugely successful film.  The brilliant genius, Mozart, died suddenly at the age of 35.  In spite of his fame he was secretly buried in an unmarked grave.  Why? Was he murdered? And if so, was it his arch-enemy and rival, Salieri?  An evening of mystery, intrigue, some shocks, suspense and glorious music – not accurate history, but outstanding theatre!
